Considering Virtual Speech Therapy? Here Are Some Tips to Make Virtual Therapy a HIT!

We absolutely love virtual speech therapy at Roswell Speech. First, it’s a convenient way to receive therapy services for busy families. There’s more flexibility in scheduling AND virtual services can eliminate that pesky commute time. As therapists, we also appreciate the natural therapy environment. Nothing compares to that natural engagement that comes from being in a comfortable home environment. We recommend these tips and strategies to make the most out of a virtual therapy session.

Use a Device (not a phone)

Modern technology is amazing and it is truly spectacular that you can join meetings from your phone. However, therapists spend much of the session modeling the desired results, such as showing what a tongue does when making the “s” sound accurately. A small phone screen can limit how much the child is able to see and impact progress towards goals.

We recommend at minimum an iPad/Chromebook BUT a child can really use some awesome virtual activities if they join from a laptop or desktop computer.

Choose a Quiet Location

Noise can interfere with a child's ability to focus on the session instructions and activities. We recommend you find a quiet space in the house for your child to learn and participate without distraction. This will really support and maximize that valuable therapy time!

Bring Toys or Fidgets

Does your child have a favorite toy or stuffed animal that will help with getting over therapy nerves? Bring it! We can use the toy during our therapy time AND help your little one feel more at ease, especially early on in their virtual therapy journey. Stay Within Hearing Range or Line of Sight

Although we try to remain as independent as possible in the session, every now and then we might ask for your support in achieving a certain sound or outcome. You can act as our hands when needed and learn some great strategies for supporting your child with their goals when we aren’t around. Prepare to See Play

We are advocates for play-based intervention and that doesn’t change regardless of virtual setup. We love combining our therapy goals with digital games or other motivating activities. This is a great way to keep a child engaged AND to avoid performance anxiety or spotlighting areas of difficulty too much. The best therapy sessions often look like game playing.

Virtual therapy gives parents a front-row seat to their child’s success. You are able to reinforce and reward your child for their hard work. Talk with your child’s therapist to see about sticker charts or other fun and inexpensive ways to celebrate their great session at the end of it.
